"Boyd's business directory" is available (and searchable!) online at Cornell University's Making of America site. It provides "access to 267 monograph volumes and over 100,000 journal articles with 19th century imprints;" the scanned material is fully indexed, and can be searched and/or browsed. (Genealogists will find much to appreciate, including official Civil War records of the armies and navies of the Union and the Confederacy.)
