11/16/01 - Blew the second 700R4 transmission, and it had been built to
take some punishment, so the next modification is a T56 six speed conversion. Speedautomotive sells conversion
kits, and I ordered one from them.
It is a complete package out of a 1997 Trans AM (64K miles), and it includes
the transmission, bell housing, entire shifter assembly, master and slave
cylinder assembly, flywheel, clutch and pressure plate, vehicle speed sensor,
clutch and brake pedal assembly and the lower console weather boot.
The cost was $1500, with shipping expected to be around $80-$100.
A couple of other parts needed are a new crossmember (Steve Spohn makes a nice one for $100), and a
manual shift console plate to replace the automatic that is currently on there
(Year
One Auto : $110).
I will probably need a recalibration box as well, because of the gearing
differences of my 3.27 9 bolt Borg Warner rear and the stock 3.42 gears of the
97 Trans Am. Dakota
Digital makes a calibration box that is known to work for this application,
$80.
02/18/02 - Have the T56 installed. Went with a McLeod clutch and
pressure plate, Spohn crossmembar and torque arm. Pics are here.
03/11/03 – Installed a Ford 9” rear, 370 gears. Damn axle tube was
cracked, had to pull the whole thing out, disassemble it again and have the
tube welded. The traction is now unbelievable though, so it was worth it. I
haven’t had it to the track yet.
June – front end is shot. Car is off the road till I get time to rebuild it.
I also have a Super Ram that needs to be installed once I decide what cam I
want to put in…
